Machine tools are among the important machines that shape materials by chip removal. These machines, which used to be fully manual, were strengthened with the presence of steam energy and their capacity increased with the introduction of electrical energy. Today, with the advances in electronics, machine tools have become more precise and useful. As a result of advances in computer technologies in recent years, machine tools have gained much different capabilities than the first generations.

The use of computers in production machines and the introduction of computer-controlled production further accelerated the development of the production sector. Production sectors have made great progress in terms of quality, precision, speed, cost, time, gain and control. Nowadays, computer aided systems such as CNC (Computer Numerical Control) are used in production sector. In this way, work accidents caused by machine tools have decreased to the level of extinction. In addition, as it is completely computer controlled production, the need for the mastery of the machine users has decreased to the lowest levels as in the past.

The development of machine tools has been effective in increasing the mechanical possibilities. On the other hand opportunities in the field of electrical and electronic engineering have also increased. In the production of modern machine tools, it has always been at the forefront to facilitate the work of the employees using the machine, to assist the employees more, and to make the tiresome and complex works to be done by the employees. Thus, a single operator can operate multiple machines at the same time.

Machine tools are so clever and powerful, but on the other hand, they are electrically operated construction machines and they are exposed to certain risks in terms of the safety of the employees during work and the property safety of the enterprises. For this reason, the Regulation on the Health and Safety Conditions in the Use of Work Equipment issued by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security in 2013 included workbenches within the scope of construction machinery and equipment. This issue can be found in the Machine Tool article in the annex to the Regulation on Maintenance, Repair and Periodic Inspection (Annex 3).

In accordance with the aforementioned regulations, checks of machine tools and equipment must be carried out in the range and criteria recommended by the manufacturer, if not otherwise provided in the relevant standards. However, if the manufacturer has not recommended any conditions, then a risk assessment study should be performed. In this study, criteria such as workplace environmental conditions, how often the machines are used and how long they are used should be taken into consideration and control periods and control criteria should be determined accordingly. However, the inspection intervals should not exceed one year. In addition, these checks must be performed by mechanical engineers, machine technicians or high technicians.
