Gantry Crane Periodic Inspection and Inspection

Gantry cranes are also commonly known as port cranes, stand cranes or foot cranes. These cranes are widely used in shipyards, ports and factory warehouses. Gantry cranes are generally moved on rails. However, rubber wheel types are also used for low and medium loads. Such cranes have been produced more in recent years. Carrying capacities increase up to 800 tons and foot openings up to 1,20 meters.

Since gantry cranes are mostly used outdoors, it is important to ensure their safety against strong winds. Most of these cranes are used with electric motors and some of them are used with gasoline and diesel engines.

In the Regulation on Health and Safety in the Use of Work Equipment published by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, portal cranes are included in the group of lifting and transmitting machines. In this case, the gantry cranes must have the power to lift and suspend at least 1,25 times the declared load. They also need to have braking systems to carry and maintain this load.

Generally, the braking systems of the cranes are the systems that keep the loads suspended as soon as the operator withdraws his hand from the control. Without this braking system, the load does not hang and starts to run away with the weight. The load brakes are therefore the main part of the cranes.

Motor gantry is also used in gantry cranes, which is similar to the mechanism used in elevator systems. Cranes have mainly braking characteristics suitable for the area they are used. For example, the braking distance can be set to sudden stop or deceleration of the electric brakes.

Our company carries out periodic inspections and inspections of gantry cranes within the scope of periodic controls of hoisting and conveying machines in accordance with the legal regulations in force and the standards published by domestic and foreign organizations. About this A few standards are based on:

  • TS 10116 Lifting and conveying machines - Cranes - Inspection and test methods
  • Steel wire ropes - Safety - Section 12385: Operation and maintenance information
  • TS ISO 4309 Cranes - Wire ropes - Application rules for inspection and decommissioning
