Voltage Harmonic Measurement

Harmonic current and voltage means deterioration of voltage wavelength in power systems. The rapid developments in power electronics today lead to an increase in harmonics. In general, rectifiers and frequency inverters are harmonic sources. The main reason for the formation of harmonics is the non-linear circuit elements used in electrical circuits. In these circuit elements, harmonics occur because the relationship between voltage and current is not linear. The arcs of the lighting devices operating according to the discharge principle, the supersaturation of the magnetic circuits or the switching of the voltage in the power electronics are nonlinear events.

Major harmonic generating circuit elements include generators, computers, uninterruptible power supplies, electrical transport systems, frequency converters, static converters, motor speed control devices, direct current energy transfer, increasingly common electric vehicles and their battery charging circuits, arc furnaces, energy saving equipment, welding machines and direct current power systems.

It is very important for consumers that electrical energy is of good quality. During the operation of electrical devices, the loads that produce harmonics and cause some irregularities in the supply voltage are of special importance. The distortion of voltage and current waveforms caused by harmonics in energy systems causes many problems. For example, the voltage drop increases and this leads to malfunctions of the devices. Asynchronous motors generate additional torques, resulting in overheating. In compensation plants, capacitors are damaged due to overload and strain. Harmonic components resonate in the network, creating overvoltages and currents circulating. Control and protection systems begin to have signal errors. As the currents increase as a result of harmonics, perforations occur in the insulation materials. Incorrect operation of computer devices. Interference starts in audio and video communication devices. The measuring devices display incorrect results. Fluctuations occur in energy transport lines. Mechanical vibrations occur in machines.
