Sidewalk and Walkways Inspections

Not to mention the sidewalk and walkways. According to modern urbanism, standards of this work are determined and appropriate pavements and walking paths are made. According to the standards set by the Turkish Standards Institute, ideal pavements should be constructed with the following characteristics:

  • On partially semi-intersecting, semi-access controlled perimeter roads, the width of the sidewalks must be at least 1,50 meters.
  • In cases where no sidewalk is required, banquets between 0,75 and 2 meters should be made.
  • The width of the pedestrian roads to be built on both sides of the vehicle road in the zone connection, intra-zone and service roads must be at least 2 meters.
  • Pedestrian walkways should be at least 2,50 meters wide on roads without a front yard.
  • In areas with high pedestrian traffic and central business areas, the width of the sidewalk should be at least 5 meters.
  • However, if the road width does not allow, the pavement width can be 3 meters.
  • The pavement width should be at least 1 meters on the roads in residential areas open to construction.
  • There should be no obstacles such as pedestrians, pedestrians, traffic signs, electric poles and signs.
  • On pedestrian pavements, the upper level of curbstone must be no more than 0,15 meters above the upper level of the roadway.
  • The slope of the sidewalks towards the roadway for the easy flow of surface water must be 2-3 percent.
  • Border stones should be between 0,70 and 1 meters in length and width should be between 0,15 and 0,20 meters.
  • Pedestrian pavements should be made of easily removable and recoatable material.

As you can see, the pavements and walkways are a matter to be taken seriously and are very important for the safety of people. They should be inspected by the competent inspection and inspection bodies to ensure that they are constructed correctly.

Among the activities of the municipality, the construction of sidewalks and walking paths are important. However, in the current situation, the pavements contain many neglects and mistakes both in terms of the places where they are built and the way they are built. In many parts of the city, some of the pavements and walkways are inexorably damaged. Most importantly, there is no compliance with the standards. The narrowest pavement widths should not be obeyed and pavements that cannot be reached for disabled and old people are made.

For this reason, the test and inspection works to be carried out by the authorized institutions are important.

Authorized test and inspection organizations also perform sidewalk and walkway inspections within the scope of environmental inspections. A few standards considered during these studies are:

  • TS 12576 Urban roads - Design rules for structural measures and markings for accessibility at sidewalk and pedestrian crossings
  • TS 12716 Urban roads - Design rules for protective barriers on sidewalks
  • TS 436 EN 1340 Concrete curb stones for floor covering - Requirements and test methods
  • TS EN 1343 Natural curb stones laid on external floors - Requirements and test methods
