Occupational health and safety is now included in the training programs of universities and trained and qualified personnel are trained within the framework of an academic program. The aim of this program is to train employees to work in occupational health and safety in order to prevent occupational accidents and diseases in work life. In this context, the basic duties that the employees working in the field of occupational health and safety will undertake in order to prevent occupational accidents and occupational diseases encountered in working life are as follows:

  • Carrying out risk assessment studies in terms of occupational health and safety in working environments
  • Controlling work environments
  • To check the requirements of occupational health and safety of various machinery and equipment used during activities
  • To prepare emergency plans and applications
  • Observing fire prevention work
  • To serve to make employees more aware of these issues

Personnel working in the field of occupational health and safety also undertake the following responsibilities:

  • To make the necessary attempts at the senior management in order to carry out risk analyzes in the enterprise and to prevent possible risks.
  • To be sensitive to the agenda of occupational health and safety and to follow developments closely

Employees' lives are largely spent in the work environment. Therefore, the companies operating in various sectors It is a great need for them to be prepared for emergencies, to monitor employee health and safety performances, to initiate improvement works according to the results obtained and to have written their activities in this direction.

Initial studies in this direction were conducted by the British Standards Institute. The BS 8800 Occupational Health and Safety Management System Guide was published in 1996 and is the first standard in this regard. However, when the enterprises search for a document proving that they have applied this standard, it is insufficient. Thereupon, different occupational health and safety standards have been published by various organizations. Although these standards are different in terms of content and application, they are based on BS 8800 standard.

In order to eliminate this complex structure, independent audit companies and certification bodies came together and prepared the internationally accepted OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health and Safety Management System standard. This standard (Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series) was published by the British Standards Institute in 1999.

However, with the advent of new technological developments and the emergence of new needs, the last two years, this sISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management System, which will replace the standard, is being prepared. It is expected that the ISO 45001 standard, whose draft works have been completed and whose general clauses have been adopted, will be published soon. In this case, the OHSAS 18001 standard will disappear. However, the OHSAS 18001 certificate is still in force today and will remain in effect for a while after the ISO 45001 standard is issued.
